US stock futures dropped on Tuesday as investors analyzed how Canada and China were responding to President Donald Trump’s latest round of tariffs. Concerns over a possible deepening trade war weighed on the markets.
Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F) dipped 0.3%, while S&P 500 futures (ES=F) lost 0.5%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 (NQ=F) saw a bigger hit, dropping 0.6%, as all three major indexes took a step lower.
On Monday, stocks tumbled after Trump declared there was "no room left" for Canada or Mexico to negotiate changes to his tariff plans. This escalated fears of an all-out trade war.
Markets are reacting to the potential impact of Trump’s broad tariffs on America’s biggest trading partners. The new measures, which include a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico and a tariff hike on Chinese goods from 10% to 20%, officially took effect at midnight ET on Tuesday.
Canada quickly responded with a broad set of immediate tariffs on US imports. Meanwhile, China announced 15% additional tariffs on US agricultural products like chicken and pork, set to take effect on March 10. Many analysts viewed China’s response as less aggressive than expected, leaving the door open for further negotiations with the US.
Retail giant Target (TGT) warned that these tariffs could pressure its first-quarter profits, despite reporting stronger-than-expected earnings before the market opened. Its stock remained mostly unchanged in early trading. Best Buy (BBY), another major retailer, also reported better-than-expected quarterly results but issued a cautious annual sales outlook. This sign of consumer uncertainty sent its shares lower.
